Year 1

Welcome to our Year 1 Classes!

To keep up to date with everything that is going on in school and in your child's class then make sure you have signed up to ClassDojo. Speak to your child's teacher if you need to know more or click here.

In Year 1 we have two classes - Deer and Dragonflies.

In Year 1 Deer the class teacher is Miss Martin. The teaching assistants are Mrs Jones and Mrs Harding.

In Year 1 Dragonflies the class teacher is Miss Cullinane. The teaching assistant is Mrs Walker.

Both classes are made up of children who are aged between 5 and 6 years old. The children follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 which builds upon the children’s learning and experiences in Reception.

Please look at the relevant pages on our website for more details!

In Year 1 we expect:

  • Reading books in reading bags to be brought in every day. However, we only change them on a Thursday.
  • Children need to be heard read at home and talked to about what they have read. See the inside of their Project X books for questions related to the text.
  • Reading record to be signed and please make a simple comment to share how your child has read for Dojo rewards.
  • A charge of £5 for lost/damaged reading books.
  • We encourage our children to be independent, therefore we ask parents to remain outside the building at the start and end of the day.
  • On Mondays we will send ‘Monday Maths’ homework. On Wednesdays we will send ‘Word Wednesday’ spelling homework.
  • P.E. kit to be in school on P.E. days which are Monday and Thursday (click here to see what the correct P.E. kit should be).

Topic Overview

Each half term you will receive an overview of what we will be learning on ClassDojo.

Overviews for the whole school year can be found by following the link on the right hand side of the page.

Children are taught phonics daily using aspects from RWI (Read, Write Inc.) and the Letter and Sounds programme. In Year 1 all children will have a phonics screening check during June and the results will be reported to you within their report at the end of the summer term. Teachers will also make assessment on progress throughout the year. Parents will be invited in, in late autumn term to be given a brief insight into what the screening test looks like and how they can provide support at home.

We expect children to read daily with adults at home.

  • Monday – Maths homework.
  • Wednesday – Spellings.
  • Friday – Phonics.

In readiness for the new things you will be learning, at the end of every half term we will set a ‘Make it, Create it’ homework.

P.E. Kits

Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit in school. All kit should be named and kept in a labelled bag to be left in school. It is advised that the children keep their P.E. bags in school for the duration of the half term, as occasionally your child may use it as spare clothes when an accident has occurred.

We like to encourage physical fitness here at Primrose Hill. Every day we take part in a DAILY MILE run using our excellent outside facilities!

Children have access to a daily healthy snack and a small bottle of milk during the morning session. Throughout the day children have a water bottle labelled with their name that they can have access to throughout the day.

If you would like to discuss anything further or have any questions regarding what is being covered in Year 1 then please contact the office or send a message through ClassDojo to make an appointment with the class teacher.
