Welcome to our Year 1 Classes!

In Year 1 we have two classes - Deer and Dragonflies.
In Year 1 Deer the class teacher is Mrs Ackerley. The teaching assistants are Mrs McKay and Mrs Wilson-Wright.
In Year 1 Dragonflies the class teacher is Miss Sinclair. The teaching assistant is Mrs Walker.
Both classes are made up of children who are aged between 5 and 6 years old. The children follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 which builds upon the children’s learning and experiences in Reception.

In Year 1 we expect:
- Reading books in reading bags to be brought in every day.
- Children need to be heard read at home and talked to about what they have read.
- Reading record to be signed and please make a simple comment to share how your child has read.
- A charge of £5 for lost/damaged reading books.
- We encourage our children to be independent, therefore we ask parents to remain outside the building at the start and end of the day.
- Home learning to be completed on a regular basis.
- Spellings to be practised.
- P.E. kit to be in school on P.E. days which are Monday and Friday (click here to see what the correct P.E. kit should be).
We focus our learning on different topics throughout the year; this supports the children to make links across the different subjects. We cover several topics throughout the year including;
Autumn 1 – Growth and Green Fingers
Autumn 2 – Fire! Fire!
Spring 1 –Family Album
Spring 2 – Penguins, Possums and Pigs
Summer 1 – The Great Outdoors
Summer 2 – Robots
Click the link on the right to see an overview of all of the topics we currently cover in our school.
Please note, our curriculum is currently under review and there will be some exciting changes to come. We will inform all our parents about the changes once these have been finalised.
Children are taught phonics through the Read, Write Inc (RWI) programme with the addition of sounds from Letters and Sounds. In Year 1 all children will have a phonics screening check during June and the results will be reported to you within their report at the end of the summer term. Teachers will also make assessment on progress throughout the year.
We expect children to read daily with adults at home. Flashcards with tricky words may be included in reading work. Spellings will be given out weekly and children will have a weekly test. Children in Year 1 will also receive talk homework. The expectation is your child will discuss something they have completed in class and share what they know. The talk homework will often include a challenge for those children who would like to record what they shared.
Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit in school. All kit should be named and kept in a labelled bag to be left in school. It is advised that the children keep their P.E. bags in school for the duration of the half term, as occasionally your child may use it as spare clothes when an accident has occurred.
We like to encourage physical fitness here at Primrose Hill. Every day we take part in a DAILY MILE run using our excellent outside facilities!
Children have access to a daily healthy snack and a small bottle of milk during the morning session. Throughout the day children have a water bottle labelled with their name that they can have access to throughout the day.
If you would like to discuss anything further or have any questions regarding what is being covered in Year 1 then please contact the office or send a message through ClassDojo to make an appointment with the class teacher.
