Year 4/5 - Hedgehogs

Welcome to Hedgehogs class.

We are made up of Year 4 and Year 5 pupils.

In our class we respect all and make everyone feel welcome.

Mrs Smith is our teacher and Mrs Smith is our teaching assistant. (They are two different people!)

Spike is our friendly Hedgehog; you might get lucky and be chosen to take him home with you. He is new to Ordsall and doesn’t know much about the area so we are helping him learn.

In the mornings we always study English, Maths and Reading.

English

In English we always practise our handwriting, grammar and spellings.

This term we are also learning about Folk tales and famous people from Salford.

Our Class novel for this half term is Esio Trot by Roald Dahl.

Reading

Mrs Smith helps us to understand what we are reading and why some words are better than others to use. We look at how the author uses punctuation in their writing to help us when we do our writing. We also learn how to read aloud using expression, so it becomes interesting for others to listen to.

Maths

In Maths every day we learn our times tables – by the end of the year we must know all our times tables to 12 x 12. Please can you help us learn them at home!

We will be learning numbers to 10,000, how to add them, subtract them, divide and multiply.

We must also learn how to tell the time. Please help us at home with this, especially using the clock with hands. (It is called an analogue clock.)

Topic

In our topic which we study in the afternoons, we are looking in detail about where we live and what we have around us. We will also be looking at Ordsall in the past. If you have any old photos or memories please share them with us.

PE and Computing

Our PE day is Wednesday; we must wear dark coloured shorts and a white T-shirt. We also learn computing on a Wednesday afternoon. Mr Samuel will teach us computing and Mr Myring will teach us PE.

We also get the chance to learn how to swim, but not till Spring term – February 2017.

Home Learning

We have to read each night for 15 minutes and twice a week ask an adult to listen to us read and sign our diary.

We have to learn the key words in our reading diary so we can spell them off by heart.

We also have to learn our X tables each night so we can say the answers quickly.

Sometimes we get set a special project to do, this term it is going to be about Ordsall.
