Mathematics

Maths at Primrose Hill is stimulating, exciting and fun. It is taught from Early Years through to Year 6 daily.

Arithmetic

15 minutes of daily arithmetic is planned carefully in line with year group expectations and individual needs. In these lessons the children are able to develop conceptual understanding and are growing their ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. This helps them to develop fluency in the fundamentals of their mathematics enabling them to tackle increasingly complex problems over time.

Mathematics at Primrose Hill

From Reception to year 6, Primrose Hill use a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity, excitement and to nurture confidence in maths. Through varied and frequent practice our pupils are able to reason mathematically and make links between subjects. With this deeper level of understanding, our children are able to justify their working and prove their understanding using appropriate mathematical language. Using our mastery approach, we are able to support our children to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems. This includes breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and encouraging perseverance in seeking solutions. At Primrose Hill, our lessons allow our children have access to practical equipment. We ensure also use models and images before moving to abstract theories. This results in our children having a deep understanding of place value and therefore ensuring all maths lessons at Primrose Hill are built on firm foundations.

Helping our children catch up, keep up and get ahead following on from the COVID-19 pandemic

Using a combination of pupil premium, catch up premium and funding through the NTP, our school has created a series of sessions aimed at identified pupils in order for them to catch up on any lost ground due to national school closures in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the pandemic.  We also recognise that every child has been affected by these closures in some way or another.  In response to this, after heavy consultation with parents, it was agreed to temporarily extend our school day by15 minutes for the 2010-21 academic year in order to focus on the areas of number (inc times tables) and reading.  By extending the school day in this way, each child will, by the end of this academic year, have received an extra 40 hours of direct teaching & learning time.

Home Learning

At Primrose Hill we are proud to use Times Tables Rock Stars. It is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. This format has very successfully boosted times tables recall speed for hundreds of thousands of pupils over the last 8 years in over 14,000 schools - both primary and secondary - worldwide.

As part of our home learning we expect our children to complete 10 minutes of Times Tables Rock Stars Monday-Friday. On the right is the link to access the games from home.
