RE
At Primrose Hill Primary School we believe it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and understand religion in order to appreciate the world and others around them. An effective RE curriculum helps foster good relations between individuals from different cultures and backgrounds This is in keeping with the Equality Act 2010.
Through the teaching of Religious Education across our school, pupils will broaden their own spiritual and moral dimensions of life, alongside developing their own knowledge of world faiths, beliefs, values and traditions of individuals, societies, communities and cultures.
We encourage our pupils to be inquisitive about the world and community they live in and to reflect upon their own beliefs, values and experiences. The Religious Education curriculum at Primrose Hill is enhanced further with opportunities for children to visit places of worship in our local and neighbouring area. We also welcome and promote guest speakers and volunteers from varying faiths and walks of life to provide children with first-hand experiences and to support the connections within our local community.
Throughout each topic, children will be given the opportunity to:
- Learn about the religious beliefs, teachings and questions about meaning,
- Learn about the different way in which the religion is expressed (including art and music)
- Learn about religious practices and how these build on values and morals.
This will enable children to understand a range of religions and world views, express ideas and the significance of religion to the modern world and gain skills that encourage them to raise questions and debate ideas.

Parents/carers have a right to withdraw their child from RE
Before doing this, parents are encouraged to come and speak to the headteacher about what our school’s RE curriculum covers in order to help them come to an informed decision. However, parents do not need to give any reason for this and we will grant all requests in writing from parents/carers to withdraw their child, wholly or partly, from:
• Receiving religious education (RE) given in the school in accordance with the school’s basic curriculum
• Attendance at religious worship in the school
When a child is withdrawn from RE, we have a duty to supervise these pupils, but not to:
• Provide additional teaching that is not RE
• Incur extra cost
This may mean that a child is still in the same room as to where the RE lesson is taking place if there are no other places for them to go. Please note that parents only have an automatic right to withdraw their children from RE and some aspects of relationships and sex education (RSE); no other curriculum areas are included in this right.
