Welcome to Design and Technology at Primrose Hill Primary School
Our Vision and Intent
At Primrose Hill Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology plays an important role in developing curious, knowledgeable and confident learners. Our aim is to provide an engaging and ambitious curriculum that builds on children's prior knowledge, develops essential skills and inspires a lifelong interest in the subject.
Through our teaching, we want all children to develop practical mastery in iterative design processes—including designing, making, evaluating, and applying technical knowledge across mechanisms, structures, textiles, electrical systems, and food preparation—make meaningful connections with the world around them and understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom.
Intent
At the heart of our Design and Technology curriculum is the belief that every child is an innovator, engineer, and designer, empowered to create functional products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We nurture practical capability and creative confidence by introducing pupils to ground-breaking engineers, inventors, chefs, and designers across history and modern society. Through a rich, progressive pathway, children master technical knowledge in structures, mechanical systems, textiles, electrical circuits, and healthy cooking while working safely with a wide range of tools, equipment, and materials. Every child learns to use design portfolios and step-by-step plans to generate, develop, model, and evaluate their ideas against clear design criteria. We foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a lifelong appreciation for how design and technology shape the modern world.
Think Like a Designer
We want our children to develop the skills and mindset of real subject specialists. Through our curriculum, children will have opportunities to think, question, explore and work like a designer, engineer, and practical innovator.
Children will have opportunities to:
- Master fundamental practical skills across key strands including mechanical systems (levers, linkages, gears, pulleys), structures (frameworks, stability), textiles (joining techniques, pattern-making), electrical systems (circuits, switches, computer control), and food technology (healthy nutrition, preparation, cooking techniques).
- Investigate existing products and user needs, disassembling real-world items and testing materials to understand how design criteria, functionality, safety, and aesthetics inform successful products.
- Make connections between design, sustainability, and the wider world, evaluating how products impact the environment, culture, and society, and exploring how human ingenuity addresses global challenges.
- Communicate and showcase creative solutions, using annotated sketches, exploded diagrams, prototypes and technical vocabulary to present ideas, test function, reflect critically, and demonstrate finished products against specific criteria.
Aspirations and Future Careers
We want children to understand how their learning connects to the wider world and the many opportunities available to them in the future. Through Design and Technology, we aim to broaden children's aspirations and help them discover interests, talents and potential career pathways.
Careers linked to this subject that children may explore include:
- Mechanical & Civil Engineer – Designing, building, and testing infrastructure, vehicles, robotics, and machinery to solve complex real-world problems.
- Product & Industrial Designer – Transforming inventive ideas into functional, safe, and attractive everyday physical products, gadgets, and tools.
- Food Technologist & Executive Chef – Developing nutritious food recipes, mastering culinary techniques, and exploring sustainable food production systems.
- Sustainable Fashion & Textile Developer – Crafting functional garments, technical fabrics, and eco-friendly textiles using innovative joining and production techniques.
- Software Engineer & Automation Specialist – Programming microcontrollers, sensors, and computer-controlled hardware to power modern smart technology and devices.
Our Curriculum
Our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully planned to build children's knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school. Learning is designed to revisit and build upon prior knowledge, develop subject-specific vocabulary and ensure that children have the foundations they need for future learning.
Please see the attached curriculum objectives, which outline the knowledge and skills children are expected to develop in line with the National Curriculum.
Prestolee Multi Academy Trust
Prestolee Trust is a thriving, ambitious Trust of diverse schools that focuses on training and collaboration to build a culture of excellence. We believe that creating a foundation of highly skilled, motivated teachers is the best way to nurture our children and contribute to our schools' wider communities.
