Welcome to Music at Primrose Hill Primary School

Our Vision and Intent

At Primrose Hill Primary School, we believe that Music plays an important role in developing curious, knowledgeable and confident learners. Our aim is to provide an engaging and ambitious curriculum that builds on children's prior knowledge, develops essential skills and inspires a lifelong interest in the subject.

Through our teaching, we want all children to develop a love of music, the confidence to express themselves creatively and the skills to become enthusiastic, knowledgeable and lifelong musicians, make meaningful connections with the world around them and understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom.

Intent

Our vision for music is to inspire every child to develop a lifelong love and appreciation of music. Through a rich and engaging curriculum, we want children to become confident, creative and enthusiastic musicians. We aim to develop their skills in singing, listening, composing and performing, while building their understanding of rhythm, pitch, notation and a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Children will have opportunities to explore different instruments, experiment with sound, work collaboratively and perform to others. We want every child to experience the joy of making music, develop their musical confidence and appreciate music as a powerful form of expression.

Think Like a Musician

We want our children to develop the skills, knowledge and mindset of real musicians. Through our curriculum, children will have opportunities to think, question, explore and work creatively like a musician.

Children will have opportunities to:

  • Develop their musical skills through singing, playing instruments, composing and performing.
  • Listen carefully to a wide range of music, exploring different genres, styles, cultures and traditions.
  • Experiment with rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics, applying their understanding of musical elements.
  • Make connections between different musical styles, composers and traditions, recognising how music reflects the world around them.
  • Share, perform and evaluate their own music, expressing opinions and explaining their musical choices.

Aspirations and Future Careers

We want children to understand how music connects to the wider world and the many opportunities it can offer. Through our music curriculum, we aim to inspire children to discover their musical interests and talents, develop their creativity and recognise the variety of exciting career pathways available within the music industry.
