Writing
Welcome to Writing at Primrose Hill Primary School
Our Vision and Intent
At Primrose Hill Primary School, we believe that English plays an important role in developing curious, knowledgeable and confident learners. Our aim is to provide an engaging and ambitious curriculum that builds on children's prior knowledge, develops essential skills and inspires a lifelong interest in the subject.
Through our teaching, we want all children to develop deep grammatical knowledge, a rich and expressive vocabulary, and fluent transcription skills alongside the ability to craft purposeful, captivating prose and poetry across diverse genres, make meaningful connections with the world around them and understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom.
Intent
Our intent for English is to inspire every child to become a confident, articulate, and creative communicator with a lifelong love of language. Through a rich, text-driven curriculum, we empower pupils to develop deep grammatical knowledge, a sophisticated vocabulary, and robust transcription skills. Children learn to craft purposeful prose and poetry across diverse genres, mastering the nuances of tone, structure, and audience. Beyond technical accuracy, we provide rich literary experiences that encourage pupils to find their authentic voice, express complex ideas with flair, and take pride in their writing. Every child leaves us equipped with the essential communication skills required to succeed in secondary education and beyond.
Think Like a Writer
We want our children to develop the skills and mindset of real subject specialists. Through our curriculum, children will have opportunities to think, question, explore and work like a writer!
Children will have opportunities to:
- Progress from emergent mark-making, phonics application, and letter formation in EYFS to mastering fine motor control, complex grammar, precise editing, and deliberate stylistic choices in Year 6.
- Explore language through rich picture books, sensory mark-making, and talk-for-writing in EYFS, building up to analysing texts, investigating authorial intent, and interrogating high-level literature in Key Stage 2.
- Apply foundational phonics, vocabulary, and sentence structures in early writing, expanding into a deep reservoir of literary devices, structural models, and genre-specific techniques across diverse narrative and non-fiction forms.
- Connect storytelling to their immediate environment, personal experiences, and play in EYFS, broadening to write for authentic real-world audiences, global causes, historical contexts, and contemporary campaigns by Year 6.
- Share ideas orally and through dictation in Early Years, developing into confident young authors who read their writing aloud and create polished portfolios to share their final pieces.
Aspirations and Future Careers
