Welcome to Physical Education at Primrose Hill Primary School
Our Vision and Intent
At Primrose Hill Primary School, we believe that Physical Education plays an important role in developing curious, knowledgeable and confident learners. Our aim is to provide an engaging and ambitious curriculum that builds on children's prior knowledge, develops essential skills and inspires a lifelong interest in the subject.
Through our teaching, we want all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities, make meaningful connections with the world around them and understand how their learning can be applied beyond the classroom.
Intent
At Primrose Hill, we place great importance on developing pupils’ teamwork, communication, resilience and leadership skills. We aim to provide fun, engaging and inclusive PE lessons that encourage all pupils to participate, develop confidence and enjoy being physically active. It is based around learning new skills, improving those skills then utilising those skills in competition. EYFS and KS1 learn all the basic skills of running, throwing, and catching and other basics that improve their physical literacy. In LKS2, these skills are built on and improved giving children the chance to use these skills in competitions. They are introduced to sports and their rules. In UKS2, children have the skills in place and the curriculum gives them as many opportunities to be competitive as possible, with intra and inter school competitions.
Think Like an Athlete
We want our children to develop the skills and mindset of real subject specialists. Through our curriculum, children will have opportunities to think, question, explore and train like an athlete.
Children will have opportunities to:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
- Develop communication and team work skills
Swimming and Water Safety
At Primrose Hill all year 4 children will receive swimming lessons. Pupils will have weekly 1 hour swimming lessons, taught by swimming coaches for 18 weeks. All pupils will be taught to: swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, to use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] and to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Aspirations and Future Careers
We want children to understand how their learning connects to the wider world and the many opportunities available to them in the future. Through PE we aim to broaden children's aspirations and help them discover interests, talents and potential career pathways.
Careers linked to this subject that children may explore include:
- Physical Education (PE) Teacher
- Strength and Conditioning Coach / Sports Coach
- Exercise Physiologist / Sports Scientist
- Outdoor Activity / Adventure Instructor
- Sports Development Officer
Enrichment Opportunities
We believe that memorable experiences help bring learning to life. Wherever possible, we provide opportunities for children to deepen their understanding of PE beyond the classroom.
These may include:
- Educational visits and trips: Swimming galas
- Visitors and workshops: Fit fence, mini archery sessions, Edgerush Flag Football sessions, weekly PE lessons with Manchester United Foundation
- Competitions, performances, exhibitions or special projects: Local cluster competitive sports such as dodgeball and basketball
- Extra curricular opportunities: Termly after school sports clubs ran by Manchester United for KS1 and KS2
Our Curriculum
Our Physical Education curriculum is carefully planned to build children's knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school. Learning is designed to revisit and build upon prior knowledge, develop subject-specific vocabulary and ensure that children have the foundations they need for future learning.
Please see the attached curriculum objectives, which outline the knowledge and skills children are expected to develop in line with the National Curriculum.
